This website is intended to provide handful information to insureds (planters, metayers and millers) of the Sugar Industry and to the public at large an insight of the Sugar Insurance Fund Board. The Fund set up by Government in consultation with the sugar producers operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Finance & Economic Development and is funded entirely by insureds of the Sugar Industry. The Sugar Insurance Fund Board provides covers to all insureds for losses in sugar production arising from inclement weather such as cyclones, drought and excessive rainfall.
The Fund also operates a fire insurance.
Violent cyclones in 1945 precipitated events. Action at governmental level in London and in Mauritius, and at the Chamber of Agriculture led to Ordinance no. 53 of 1946 with the formal establishment in October of that year of a Cyclone and Drought Insurance Fund.
